THE WILDEST DREAM

SUMMARY

National Geographic The Wildest Dream Uses astonishing visuals to tell the intersecting stories of George Mallory, the first man to attempt a summit of Mount Everest, and Conrad Anker, the mountaineer who finds Mallory's frozen remains 75 years later.

Eighty-five years after George Mallory s final attempt to summit Mount Everest, The Wildest Dream explores Mallory s obsession with becoming the first person to reach the highest place on Earth. Told through the explorer s poignant and evocative letters to his wife, Ruth, previously unseen photos and film archive from 1924 (restored from the original nitrate especially for the film), dramatization and a modern-day expedition retracing the original route taken in 1924, Mallory s incredible adventure lives again. The expedition was led by renowned mountaineer Conrad Anker, whose life became inextricably linked with Mallory s after he found Mallory s body on Everest in 1999. Using replica 1920s-era clothing and equipment, Anker sets out to solve the great mystery of whether Mallory succeeded in summiting Everest before he died he was last seen just 800 feet from the summit before the clouds closed in and he disappeared into legend. The most heartbreaking clue: All of Mallory s belongings were found intact on his body, except the photograph of his beloved Ruth, which he promised to leave at the top of the world if he succeeded. -- © National Geographic

CARSTENSZ - The Seven Summit

SYNOPSIS Snowy Mountains rise high above the untouched jungle of New Guinea, breaking through heavy rain clouds. A limestone pyramid, known as the Carstensz Pyramid, soars above them as the most exotic, but also the most inaccessible mountain in the world. The peak of this mountain was conquered for the first time, by Heinrich Harrer, in 1962. Access to the foothills of this mountain lead through the territory of the legendary Damal native tribes and still belongs amongst the most adventurous expeditions. Apart from obtaining the necessary permits, the biggest problem lies is in persuading the naked natives to help us with the transport of equipment from Beoga, across wild rivers and mountainous jungle, up to the snowy glaciers below the Carstensz Pyramid.

GREAT CLIMB

This is the DVD set (3 Discs) of the Great Climb event filmed live in August of this year; this was the BBC’s first live climbing outside broadcast since the ‘Old Man of Hoy’ event back in 1967. Tim Emmett and Dave MacLeod attempted a new route on Sron Uladail in Harris - the result? Over five hours of nail-biting television, a new E9 7b and a top out seconds before the broadcast was due to end - the DVD set includes the Director’s cut with a load of previously unseen and unheard material.

BLINDSIGHT

The documentary, Blindsight, is the story of a 2004 expedition when Erik and his Mt. Everest team, attempted to guide six blind Tibetan teenagers to the 23,000 foot Lhakpa Ri on the north side of Mount Everest.
Blindsight was directed by Lucy Walker, who also directed the award winning documentary, THE DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND. It was Produced by Sybil Robson Orr and Steven Haft, also Producer of DEAD POET'S SOCIETY.
The film recently premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. One reviewer wrote, "Blindsight premiered today at the Varsity theatre, garnering possibly the loudest and longest applause of any Real to Reel film so far at the festival. The film's director, Lucy Walker, documented the amazing story of six blind Tibetan children attempting to climb a 23,000 foot peak near Mount Everest in 2004. The children were lead by their teacher, Sabriye Tenberken, who is also visually impaired, and Erik Weihenmayer, a blind man who climbed to the top of Mount Everest. Filled with emotion, struggle, triumph and a rousing rendition of "Happy Together", Blindsight instantly became a festival favorite. Great cinematography combined with a complex journey of self-discovery and teamwork will have many festival goers talking about Blindsight."

GO CLIMB

The DVD footage means that you can watch knots being tied, see how climbers move on the rock and observe sequences of actions - lowering off a sport climb for example - again and again until they make sense. You can choose to watch by chapter, by section of chapter or just watch all the way through.
It makes most sense to watch in sections then use the page symbols on the screen to relate them to the book, though you can also use the DVD as a stand-alone experience.
Like we said, the information's all good and the DVD features normal-looking people doing eminently feasible climbs rather than rock superstars dyno-ing up impossible overhangs, so it's informative and nicely shot rather than exciting and inspirational.
The book is a thoroughly illustrated guide to the basics of climbing with lots of clear photographs and simple, well-presented information though the introductory chapters are a bit busy.

KARAKORAM HIGHWAY

With the intention to record the primitive life and culture of tribes in the area between the deserts of Asia and plains of Pakistan, where the highest mountain ranges of the world - the Himalayas, Hindu-Kush, Karakoram and the Pamirs meet, as well as to see this unique mountainous land, in the year 1993 four Slovaks decided to walk through the historical "silky" trade route across the area. The strategic Karakoram Highway had for years been a witness to the rich history and tens of thousands of the Chinese and the Pakistani were building it for a quarter of a century. This three-part documentary will take us from Rawalpindí to Kashgar in China.

INTO THIN AIR

When he made the decision to climb Everest in 1996, Krakauer was a journalist for Outside magazine (which I love to read!). At first he intended to report back on the commercialization of the mountain, and only climb to Base Camp. Little did he realize that making the decision to pursue his childhood dream would lead him right into what is now known as the greatest disaster on Everest.
Krakauer chronicles the 1996 disaster, and the reader gets to know the members of the team and the climbing guides, and relive the adventure and tragedy with him. There are some tear-gerking moments that the movie also captures well, particularly when the accomplished guide Rob Hall makes his final call to his pregnant wife at home.
A year after the book was published, a TV movie was released. There are a few major differences between the book and movie, but both capture the essence of the great tragedy. The movie is a disappointment, however, relative to the excellent storytelling of the book.
